Book & Movie Pairing #2: Friendship is Hard

My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix is one of my favorite reads from last year. No one does weird humorous horror writing like Hendrix. The book follows Abby who realizes her best friend Gretchen is possessed and she is the only one that can help her. With the power to friendship and 80s tunes she will stop at nothing to help exorcise this demon. They also recently announced that they are adapting this into a film with Elsie Fisher from 8th Grade (Dir. Bo Burnham).

Then of course we have Jennifer’s Body, a film I hated when I saw it at the age of 18. Luckily I gave it a re-watch and it is now one of my favorite films. Megan Fox is incredible and does not get the credit she is due. I also love Amanda Seyfried and her portrayal of Needy who seems to be very much in love with her best friend. Karyn Kusama is an incredible director and follows up with another incredible film, The Invitation a few years later.

These two stories feel so connected in their portrayal of friendship and the lengths we will go to protect the ones we love. While one deals with demonic possession and the other deals with a succubus, they ultimately remind us that friendships can forever change us.
